| Smart Tread’s simple solution
will be extremely effective. The company proposes to use existing
technology to embed color directly into the tire tread. This
can be done at any depth within the rubber.
Smart Tread recommends a yellow layer that appears when there
is 4/32 of an inch of tread remaining. This WARNING color
will visually appear when the tread wears down to that particular
depth. Drivers need not measure tread depth, because the color
appears automatically...telling drivers when it’s wise
to slow down and allow more stopping time in wet conditions.
When the warning color appears, drivers may simply decide
to go ahead and replace their tires.
Smart Tread also recommends that a red layer be embedded
so as to reveal when just 2/32 of an inch of tread remains.
This is the point at which the tire is bald and no longer
safe to drive.
This simple warning system will go a long way toward making
our roadways safer, because accidents from blowouts and hydroplaning
will be reduced.
